Romeo is just a kid in a quiet Swiss village, helping his family work the cornfield. Then a man called Luini shows up. They call him the God of Death, and for good reason: he buys children and sells them to sweep chimneys in Milan. When Romeo's family won't hand him over, Luini burns the field to the ground. Romeo's father gets hurt trying to put out the flames. So Romeo does the only thing he can think of: he sells himself to the God of Death to pay for a doctor. On the road to Milan he meets Alfredo, a boy on the run, and the two click fast. But their new owners tear them apart almost as soon as they arrive, and Romeo gets his first real taste of the job. It's brutal. Endless scrubbing in the dark, a master's family that treats him like dirt, and a gang of older sweeps, the Wolf Pack, who seem to be waiting around every corner. Then Alfredo comes back, and the two start something new: a brotherhood of chimney sweeps called the Black Brothers. They look out for each other, and they finally start hitting back. But the Wolf Pack isn't going anywhere, and neither is the life that was sold to Romeo before he ever had a say. Can a boy who gave up his own freedom ever look up and see clean blue sky again?
