Nobody's Boy Remi

Remi is eight years old and thinks he knows exactly who he is: a boy in the French countryside, working the fields with his mother, waiting for the father who sends money home once a year from Paris. Then the father comes back. A fall from scaffolding wrecked his leg, the lawsuit went nowhere, and he limps through the door with nothing but bitterness. That is when Remi finds out he was never theirs. Someone left him on a doorstep as a baby, and only kindness kept him out of an orphanage. His mother refuses to send him away. His father sells him anyway, to a wandering entertainer with a troupe of trained animals. Just like that, the fields are gone. Remi now walks roads he has never seen, performing for strangers to earn his supper, learning what cold and hunger actually mean. Vitalis, the old musician, is not gentle, but he is not cruel either. Somewhere out there are the parents who abandoned him. Will Remi ever find them, or is the road all he gets?
