The tanuki of the Tama Hills never had it hard. They napped, they feasted, they bickered with the farmers next door, and the woods gave them everything. Then the bulldozers arrived. Tokyo keeps growing, and the hills are measured in square meters now, not seasons. Where a badger once dug for roots, there is a fence. Where a pond once sat, a parking lot. The elders call a truce between the rival clans, because fighting over scraps is pointless when the scraps are disappearing. The plan is simple and insane: remember how to shapeshift. Not just a leaf on the head trick, but the old art, the one almost nobody has mastered in generations. Young tanuki are sent across the country to find the few surviving masters. The rest stay behind to haunt the construction crews, rattle windows at night, and hope that a population that no longer believes in spirits can still be scared. It does not go the way they drew it up. Some tanuki want blood, some want tricks, some just want to go back to eating and sleeping. The humans keep pouring concrete. And every night the forest gets a little smaller. When your home is being erased and nobody believes you exist, what exactly are you supposed to do?
