In Mifuse, a tiny town with a steel mill at its heart, an explosion tears through the plant and then everything simply stops. The exits seal themselves off from the outside. Nobody ages. Kids who were in middle school stay in middle school, their senses dulled to a gray hum, while the local bigwigs decide this is God's punishment and wrap the place in superstitions to keep the peace. Masamune has made his home inside the numbness. He figures this is just how life goes now. Then his classmate Mutsumi grabs him and leads him to the fifth furnace, and in that soot black place he sees her: a girl with almost no words, crouched low, baring her teeth like a wild wolf cub. Something cracks open that day. The three of them together throw off the town's careful balance, and an impulse the bored teenagers can no longer hold back starts chewing through the streets they grew up on. A boy who had given up, a girl full of secrets, and a feral child at the center of it all. If this frozen town finally breaks apart, what will be left standing when the dust settles?
