Officer Buzz works a job most cops would quit. His partner is a Boomer. A humanoid robot, built to look and talk like anyone else. Every shift they ride together into a city that is coming apart at the seams. The AD Police keep a secret unit called Branch for exactly this kind of mess. Crimes that start and end with machines. Then there is Michaelson, who watches Buzz flinch every time the thing speaks. He doesn't get it. To him the line between a person and a Boomer is so thin you could step over it without noticing. That difference of opinion sits in the room while the three of them chase cases through the wreckage. Buzz took the assignment because someone had to. Now he has to trust a machine with his life and swallow it. Meanwhile the world outside keeps sliding toward something nobody planned for. When your backup has a serial number, what exactly are you protecting?
