Arata Miyako just wanted a normal government job. Instead he gets assigned to a tiny Tokyo ward office where the night shift means calming down angry spirits. Every one of the city's 23 wards has a department like this. His new coworkers Theo and Kyouichi barely blink when things get weird. Then on his very first patrol, a yokai in the park starts talking to him, and Arata understands every word. That shouldn't be possible. No human speaks their language. But the creature isn't impressed by that trick. It looks at Arata and calls him Abe no Seimei, the legendary exorcist from a thousand years ago. Which makes no sense, because Arata has never heard of the guy. Word spreads fast among the occult creatures of Shinjuku, and soon every spirit he meets treats him like someone who died centuries before he was born. So he starts digging into his own past while still handling complaints from things with too many eyes. Then the cases turn dangerous, and his strange gift begins to cause problems he never expected. What exactly is the connection between a rookie civil servant and a Heian-era exorcist?
