A woman is thrown aside by the man she gave everything to. She dies. And she comes back. In Yotsuya Kaidan, the ghost does not slip quietly into the night. She claws at the living until the cruelty she suffered is paid back in full. Then the story shifts. In a mansion near a small town live gods everyone else forgot, tucked away with their sorrow and their princess, a woman so gentle you almost miss how doomed the whole place is. Meanwhile a traveling medicine seller walks the roads, stopping in villages where something has gone wrong. He carries a sword. He also knows how to put a demon down. Three old tales, three kinds of dread: a betrayal that refuses to end, gods nobody worships anymore, and a cat with a family on its list. The medicine seller always asks what kind of spirit he is dealing with. What happens when the answer stops making sense?
