August 14. The hottest day of summer, and Shintarou Kisaragi finally opens his bedroom door after two years of hiding. Not by choice. The cyber girl living in his computer, Ene, watched him dump a whole glass of cola into his keyboard, and now it is dead. Every store nearby is shut for Obon, so he does the thing that terrifies him most: he steps outside and walks to the department store. Then the ordinary errand turns sideways. Hostile guys, a hostage mess, and a group of teenagers with strange powers in their eyes calling themselves the Mekakushi Dan, who fight their way through like they have done this before. They drag Shintarou and Ene into their crew, and somehow every member's past clicks into the next like puzzle pieces, one story pointing at another, until something buried underneath starts to show. So why did Ene appear on his screen in the first place? Why does this summer feel like it has happened before?
