Mametaro is a scruffy crossbreed with a nose for trouble and a secret: he talks. Not that anyone hears him. To Iku, his high school owner, he is just a dog waiting by the door. To Hanako, the fluffy girl down the street, he is something more. But spring has arrived, the riverbank is in bloom, and every walk turns into a small expedition. Then there is Akiyoshi. Iku's friend. Mametaro cannot stand him. The guy leans in too close, laughs too loud, and somehow always ends up beside Iku on the way home. A dog can only watch so much. Between supermarket runs and afternoons in the park, Mametaro keeps his own quiet campaign going. Hanako is patient. The neighborhood, plain as it looks to humans, hides smells and shortcuts and whole worlds worth exploring. So who exactly is Iku going to keep looking at, and what happens when the dog who understands everything finally decides he has had enough?
