Hotaru Yuuyami writes picture books for a living, but for two months he has not written a single line. His dog Hanako died, the last family he had, and the house went quiet in a way that scares him. His editor Tsubaki, who has known him since they were kids, keeps dragging him out for air and pushing blank pages at him. Nothing works. Then something pushes up through the dirt in his garden. It is a mushroom. It is also, unmistakably, a puppy. Hotaru carries it inside before Tsubaki can even finish objecting, and just like that the quiet house has a new resident who chews things, ignores rules, and sleeps wherever it wants. The mushroom pup has its own ideas about helping. One day it drags out what is left of Hanako's things and sets them on fire, as if grief were a pile of junk to be cleared away. Hotaru is furious, then not. Living with this stubborn little creature takes work, and work means getting out of bed. Can a man who is still holding on to one dog make room for another?
