A probe comes back from Mars and burns up on reentry. Its debris rains down across Japan, and it carries something inside it: DNA from the planet's inhabitants. Months later, people start to change. They turn into creatures called Ancients, and bullets do nothing to them. Tokyo becomes a hunting ground. One scientist, Dr. Hiroshi Hinata, builds a weapon to fight back. The MARS suit. But almost nobody can wear it. You need the right DNA, and the list of compatible people is very short. His own son Takeru, a teenager with a rough past, turns out to be the first one who can put it on. He joins the AAST, a special police unit formed to hunt the Ancients, and starts fighting monsters while barely holding himself together. Meanwhile, the fragments of that probe got shipped to the United States for study, and the transport carrying them never made it. The Ancients took it first. So what did those samples from Mars actually contain, and who is really behind what is happening to Tokyo?
