A giant wall splits the world in two. It went up to stop the Black Mist from spreading, and it stayed up. On the safe side, people crammed into artificial cities called Arks, numbered like spare parts. Shido Enishi works the ninth one, a private detective with rent to pay and cases that mostly amount to following cheating husbands through neon alleys. Then a burglary lands on his desk. Catch the thief, easy money, done by morning. Except the thief is not the story, and the trail keeps bending toward people who would rather Shido stopped walking it. What starts as a break-in turns into a conspiracy with fingers in the Arks themselves, and every answer drags him closer to the wall nobody talks about. Shido is one man with a license and no authority, poking at something built to stay buried. The Mist is still out there. The Arks are still locked. So what exactly are the people in charge protecting, and who gets sacrificed when the truth finally comes out?
