Key looks like any other seventeen year old girl. She lives quietly in the countryside with the man she calls Grandpa. Then Dr. Mima dies and leaves a message behind: find thirty thousand friends, and you can become a real person. Key is a robot. That part she knows. So she packs up and leaves the valley for Tokyo, where she runs into Sakura, a friend from childhood, and starts chasing the only shortcut she can think of. If she becomes a singer like Miho Utsuse, the idol everyone adores, the friends will come pouring in. Except Miho is tangled up with Jinsaku Ajou, the professor's old rival, a man building weapons out of machines. And Ajou has his own plans for Key. There is something buried inside her that even she does not know about, something he wants badly enough to burn the city down for. She is out there singing to strangers while a trap closes around her, and the people closest to her are not telling her everything. Can a machine with no feelings fill a room with thirty thousand people who love her before the man who built his career hating her grandfather gets his hands on what she really is?
