Aliens landed in the 21st century and never left. They just moved in, found apartments, and got on with ordinary life like everyone else. In a sleepy little town called Enohana, a broke student named Mayuko scrapes by on part time jobs and cheap food, counting every yen. Her roommate NieA is a different story: loud, lazy, allergic to responsibility. Oh, and an alien. A seventh caste one, an Under Seven, the kind nobody important pays attention to. Here is the catch. A giant wrecked mothership sits rusting above the town, a constant reminder of the day everything changed, and most people barely glance at it anymore. Mayuko grinds through each day while NieA eats her food and picks fights over nothing. Two people sharing one cramped room, one of them from another planet, both refusing to give an inch. Then one night NieA hears something. A call from that broken ship, the very one that brought her kind here. Whatever it wants, it pulls the two of them toward something that cannot be undone. So what happens when the ship finally wakes up, and what does it want with the most useless alien in town?
