Two scientists spend years on a lonely island, running experiments on their own children. The results: a daughter who is half spider, a son with dog genes, another kid who is part plant, and a mother who can hear every thought in the room. Only the youngest, Tanis, walks away untouched. He is the normal one. Then the authorities catch the parents, and the whole family gets shipped off to a busy town where nobody knows what they really are. Tanis becomes the one holding it together. He has to teach a boy with roots to sit at a dinner table, and keep his sister from spinning webs in public. One wrong move, one slipped secret, and the neighbors start asking questions. The others try. They really do. But hiding four sets of powers in a place full of people is not a small job for a kid who is barely tall enough to reach the kitchen counter. So how long can a family like this pass for ordinary before someone finally notices?
