Episode 5 · Flip Flappers

Flip Flappers

Cocona is just a regular middle schooler living with her grandmother, no big plans, no idea what she wants to do with her life. Then a hyperactive stranger named Papika barges in and drags her into an organization called Flip Flap, which sounds like a joke until the two of them fall straight into Pure Illusion, a dimension where nothing makes sense. They are hunting for crystal shards, pieces of something called the Mimi Fragment, and rumor has it this thing can grant any wish you want. The second a monster corners them, the shard starts to glow and the girls transform: Cocona becomes Pure Blade, Papika becomes Pure Barrier. Great. Except right after their first fight, three other magical girls from a rival group show up, kill the creature themselves and walk off with the fragment it dropped. So now Cocona and Papika are losing a race they barely understood they were in. To have any shot against those rivals, and against whatever else is waiting in Pure Illusion, the two of them have to actually sync up, matching feelings and timing instead of just swinging their powers around. But Papika keeps grinning like she knows more than she lets on, and that wish at the end of the hunt: who is really chasing it, and what happens if the wrong girl gets it first?
