Ergo Proxy
The last cities on Earth sit under domes, sealed off from a planet that burned out thousands of years ago. Inside Romdo, androids called AutoReivs handle the daily grind, and nobody asks questions. Then the machines start waking up. A virus with a strange name, Cogito, hands them self-awareness, and one of them goes berserk. Re-l Mayer, the ruler's granddaughter, gets the case. Routine, she thinks. It is not routine. A man named Vincent Law is running. He came to Romdo from another dome, Mosk, and now the law wants him for crimes tied to the same virus. Re-l keeps pulling the thread and finds something ugly underneath the city's calm, something about humanity's worst deeds. Meanwhile, around Vincent, reality itself starts to bend in ways that make no sense. Re-l, her AutoReiv partner Iggy, Vincent, and a small child robot named Pino end up together, an alliance nobody planned. They are chasing the truth about Romdo and about the Proxies, those beings everyone calls a myth. But if the Proxies are real, and they are, what were they actually made for?
