The Armed Detective Agency is finished on paper. Branded terrorists after Dostoevsky's scheme, they work from the shadows while the Hunting Dogs hunt them through the streets. Ranpo has one card left: find Kamui, the leader of the Decay of the Angel, and hand him over before the city tears itself apart. So Ranpo and Atsushi go to Fukuchi, the famous captain of the Hunting Dogs, and ask for amnesty. It sounds insane. Fukuchi's whole job is putting them in cells. Their only leverage is his old friendship with Fukuzawa, the Agency's president, and the two men share a history nobody else can touch. That bond might buy them a conversation. The problem is Fukuchi himself. He talks like a soldier, honorable and straight, but something underneath does not add up. A man who swears loyalty to the law and still keeps secrets from his own unit. If Ranpo misreads him, the Agency dies and Kamui walks free. If the captain is exactly what he pretends to be, why does every answer he gives feel rehearsed?
