Every morning Taiki Inomata races to the school gym before anyone else. Badminton is the excuse. The real reason stands at the far hoop, drilling basketball shots in the quiet: Chinatsu Kano, a year above him, the star of the girls' team. She barely seems to notice he exists, yet he keeps showing up, and slowly she starts to notice. Then her parents get transferred overseas. Chinatsu refuses to go with them, choosing to stay and chase a national title, and since she has nowhere to live, Taiki's mother takes her in. Just like that, the girl he has been crushing on from across the court is eating breakfast at his table. Now Taiki has to earn a starting spot on a badminton team stacked with stronger upperclassmen, and he wants to reach nationals too, the same stage she is aiming for. Hina Chouno, his childhood friend and a gymnast, is rooting for him the whole way. Can he really close the gap between them, in the sport and everywhere else?
