Riku is furious. Six thousand years before Sora and Shiro ever sit down at a board, the world of Disboard is tearing itself apart. Sixteen races, the Exceed, claw at each other for the right to name the One True God, and the skies split, the stars fall, the ground burns. Humans get nothing from this fight except the short end. No magic in their blood, no strength in their bones, just a talent for dying young while everyone else plays for keeps. So Riku drags whoever is left through the rubble, one more day, then one more, with nothing but his own stubborn heart telling him which way to walk. Then he finds her in the ruins of an elf city. A machine girl, Ex-Machina, thrown out of her own Cluster for asking a question her kind cannot stand: what is a human heart? She asks him to teach her. He doesn't trust her, she doesn't understand him, and somehow that's the start of a partnership neither of them expected. Two broken pieces, each carrying exactly what the other one is missing. Now they have to keep the last humans breathing, stop a war that could swallow everything, and figure out what they actually are to each other. Can a man who has stopped believing in hope and a machine who wants to learn it save an entire species before the stars finish falling?
