The network covers everything now. Two worlds exist side by side: the one you wake up in, and the wired one you jack into. Toru Soma runs with Steppen Wolf, a hacker crew that goes wherever it wants. Their last job is a strike on a UN database. Midway through, his friend and team leader dies beside him. Soldiers drag Toru out in cuffs. Then the deal: walk free, but work for the anti-hacker squad of the UN Security Force. So the poacher becomes the gamekeeper, chasing the people he used to drink with. Officially he is hunting computer terrorists. Really he is hunting one man, the one who killed his friend, and the other squad members carry their own private reasons into every fight. Terrorist cells, a security company, the army: three sides grinding against each other day after day. Separate incidents, unrelated on paper. Somehow they all bend toward the same point, as if something is pulling them in. The old crew still out there. The new badge on his chest. And a killer somewhere in the wired, still unnamed.
