A nano plague wrecked the planet, so most of humanity uploaded itself into DEVA, a space station where nobody dies and nobody goes hungry. Sounds like heaven. Except memory there is finite, shared out like rations, and the only way to earn more is to prove you are useful. Slack off and you get dumped in the archive, a virtual prison where they wipe you to free up space. Then a hacker called Frontier Setter starts poking holes in the system and whispering to the residents. Angela Balzac, security division, gets the job of hunting him down. His signal points to Earth, the ruined rock everyone left behind, so she ditches her digital self for a cloned body and heads down. A guide named Dingo meets her there, all swagger and dirt, and together they go looking for the hacker. What she finds instead is a wasteland that is not as dead as DEVA claims, and a paradise that is not as clean as it looks. So what happens when the perfect world turns out to be the one that needs saving?
