A ship called the Osiris finds something in the dark: an army of machines, already on its way to Zion. One crew member dives into the Matrix to send a warning. The rest just try to keep her alive long enough. They cannot win that fight, and they know it. Then the story pulls back, way back. People built a smarter machine, and for a while everyone tried to get along. It did not hold. Sky goes black, cities burn, and the losers end up plugged into a dream they never chose. Elsewhere a teenage kid wakes up convinced his whole life is fake, and men in identical suits start chasing him through the halls. A track star runs the race of his life and tears straight through the world at the finish line. Kids poke around a haunted house in Tokyo that is really a crack in the code. And a detective takes a job hunting a hacker named Trinity without asking who is paying him. Nine stories, nine different doors into the same machine. Some end in a pod, some in a wheelchair, some in a place that is not quite either. Which one would you wake up in?
