Hotori Arashiyama has a secret. After school she ties on an apron at the Seaside Cafe, a place that slapped the word maid on its sign to chase a trend and never bothered with the rest. No tea on the shelves. Service? Barely. The only people who walk in come from the shopping district down the street. Perfect cover, really, for a girl who can trip over flat ground and still call it a plan. Then she drags her friend Toshiko in for a visit. Big mistake. Toshiko takes one look at the sad room, one look at Hiroyuki Sanada parked at a table, and decides she wants in. Here is the thing: Sanada is Hotori's classmate, and he only keeps showing up because he is quietly, hopelessly into her. Toshiko is just as quietly, just as hopelessly into him. Nobody says a word about any of it. So now Hotori is juggling school, family, a love life she has no grip on, and a coworker who is also her rival in a game nobody admitted they were playing. She loves detective novels and mysteries, which is funny, because the mess she keeps wandering into never has a clean answer. Will she ever notice the boy at the corner table, or is she too busy setting off the next disaster?
