Starting college is already awkward enough. Kanji Sasahara just wants a club where people won't look at him like he's weird, so he tries the anime and manga ones. Too shy to walk in, he chickens out of every single one and ends up somewhere else entirely: Genshiken, a room full of guys who argue about anime for hours and smell like old magazines. His first visit goes badly. Senior Harunobu Madarame tears his pride apart, and Sasahara storms out swearing he is nothing like these people. Then he meets Makoto Kousaka. The guy looks like he walked off a fashion shoot, and he is the most hardcore otaku in the room. Through him Sasahara starts showing up again, browsing doujinshi, hitting the manga festival, even helping make a zine. Kousaka's girlfriend Saki Kasukabe is not having it. She hates everything this club stands for and keeps trying to drag her boyfriend back to normal life, which puts her in the same room as a bunch of people she cannot stand. Sasahara keeps telling himself he is only there to hang out. But the conventions, the late nights, the arguments over shows nobody else watches, they start to feel like home. So what happens when a guy finally stops pretending he does not belong?
