The world already ended, more or less. What's left of humanity lives quietly on a shrinking island, and at the edge of it sits a little cafe that almost nobody visits. Alpha runs the place. She's an android, polite and pretty, and she's been pouring coffee and sweeping the floor for years, ever since her owner left on a long trip and never said when he'd be back. Sometimes a letter shows up. Sometimes nothing does. Then one afternoon a courier android named Kokone rolls in and hands her a package. Inside is a camera. A gift from the master, meant for collecting memories, which is a strange thing to give someone who doesn't age. Alpha takes it out on her scooter, down empty roads and past flooded fields, and starts looking at her quiet corner of the world through a lens. That's the whole problem, really. Nothing happens here, and that's exactly what makes it hard. How long can you keep the lights on, keep the coffee warm, keep photographing a place everyone else is slowly leaving. And what do you do with all those pictures if the person you're saving them for never comes back?
