An old man lives alone in a town swallowed by water. Every few years the level creeps higher, so he hauls blocks up and adds another floor, a small dry box stacked on top of all the ones below. Then his pipe slips from his fingers and sinks down through the flooded rooms. He puts on a diving suit and goes after it. What he finds on the way down are the floors he built when his wife was still there, when his daughter was small, when the house was full of noise. The past is literally underneath him, room by room, waiting in the dark. The water keeps rising whether he remembers or not. So he keeps climbing, keeps building, keeps leaving everything he loves behind him, sealed up in the rooms below. How many more floors can one man add before there is nothing left to build on?
