In 2046, Noboru and Mikako are just two teenagers finishing middle school, texting each other the way kids do, until she gets picked. She'll fly with a UN fleet chasing the aliens who hit Earth, and he'll stay behind in Japan, sitting in a classroom that suddenly feels too big. So they do the only thing they can. They keep mailing each other from their phones. At first the replies come fast. Then slower. The fleet pushes past Mars and keeps going, and every light year between them stretches the signal. A message she sends in a minute might land on his phone when he's months older. He grows up. She barely does. The words that used to be a conversation turn into something closer to a letter from the past. He waits days, then weeks, then years for beeps that arrive out of order. She writes from the cockpit of a mecha in the dark, watching planets she'll never walk on. Two people, one thread, and the gap widening with every jump. How long can you keep talking to someone before they become a voice you only remember?
