A small town squeezed between the mountains and the ocean, and something is wrong with it. Kirie Goshima doesn't notice at first. She just walks to the station, says hi to her boyfriend Shuuichi, and mentions the odd thing she saw on the way: his father, standing in an alley, staring at a snail shell like it held the answer to everything. Shuuichi goes quiet. His father has been strange for days, and he's already decided what's happening. Not a ghost. Not a monster. A shape. The spiral. Then the old man dies, and it stops being a theory. Snail shells, the curls of plants, whirlpools out on the lake, the way the clouds twist overhead. Kirie can brush it off. She can't brush off what starts happening to the people around her, neighbors and strangers pulling inward, turning on each other, going strange in ways nobody can name. Shuuichi wants them both gone before the town swallows them, but leaving is easier to say than to do. How do you run from a thing that isn't chasing you, because it's already inside the walls, inside the water, inside the people you've known your whole life?
