Nadja grows up in an English orphanage about a hundred years ago, cheerful and bright, and for twelve years she believes her parents are dead. Then a strange package arrives for her thirteenth birthday: a cloak, a diary written in a language she cannot read, and a letter saying her mother might still be alive. Before she can even catch her breath, two men come after the brooch she wears. A stranger helps her slip away, and just like that the orphanage is behind her. She joins the Dandelion Troupe, a wandering group of performers who move from town to town across Europe. Days pass in music and footlights, but the road is also where crooks and opportunists wait. The brooch is worth a fortune, and it points to who Nadja really is. Some people want it, others want her, and not all of them mean well. A runaway girl with a diary she cannot read, a piece of jewelry she barely understands, and a mother somewhere out there. What if the person she has been searching for all along does not want to be found?
