Ranmaru Shindou just finished police academy and got assigned to a special investigations unit. His life with his little sister is pretty normal, except for the dreams. Every night the same thing: a naked girl he cannot reach. Then he walks into work on day one and there she is, in the flesh. Her name is Sakura Rokujou, and she belongs to a second, hidden branch of the force that nobody talks about. So he signs up. Not for justice, not for the badge. His parents died in a mass killing back in his hometown of Machida, and the case was never solved. He wants answers. But around Japan, deep pits are opening in the ground, and things are crawling out of them and tearing into people. The timing is not a coincidence. Now Ranmaru is stuck between a police job that is a cover story, a partner who knows more about him than she lets on, and holes in the earth that lead somewhere nobody wants to look. What really happened in Machida that night, and why does Sakura keep showing up in his dreams?
