Something rotten breathes under Shinjuku, and nobody notices until the night the dragon vein snaps. Tatsuma Hiyuu barely says a word. He just transfers into Magami Academy for his last year of high school, keeps his head down, and then folds a hallway full of tough guys in about four seconds. That gets him a best friend in Kyouichi, the class delinquent, and then a wrestling club kid, an archery captain, and the student council president somehow end up standing next to him too. Then the pulse tears open. Raw energy floods the street, and all five of them wake up with something wrong and powerful inside their bodies. An antiques dealer named Hisui Kisaragi is the one who explains it: demons are real, they are coming, and this group is now expected to stop them. They fight. They win a few. It feels almost manageable for a while. It is not manageable. The dragon vein did not break on its own. Someone cracked it open on purpose, using dark arts, because they want something old and dead to walk again. Five teenagers with homework and bad tempers against a person willing to end the city to get what they want. What happens when the thing they are meant to protect is also the thing that decides who they become?
