A baby opens his eyes in a dead city. No one should be alive here. Yet three figures lean over him: a skeleton, a ghost, and a mummy. They name him Will and raise him as their own. Blood, the skeleton, drills him in swordwork. Gus, the ghost, teaches him magic. Mary, the mummy, shows him prayer and duty. None of them are alive. All of them love him. Will grows up among broken stones, and the questions grow with him. Who is he, really? What are his guardians hiding? They promise to tell him everything when the time is right. Then the time arrives. Every adult must swear an oath to a god, and the oath's weight decides how much power that god gives back. But swearing is not the hard part. Keeping it is. Will must leave the ruins and walk into a world even his undead family has never seen. Some gods greet him with mercy. Others want him broken. And somewhere inside him sits a secret he has carried since birth, one he has told no one. When the moment comes to speak it out loud, who will still be standing beside him?
