Somewhere far out in space, a ship is falling apart and four astronauts are climbing into escape pods. Their crewmate Makimura is already dead. He left a note saying someone was going to kill him, and now nobody has time to sit with that, because the ship is coming apart around them. Then the weird part. A fifth pod drifts along behind them. Makimura's. They call it. Nothing comes back. Back on the dying ship, fingers start pointing at Kizaki, since he and Makimura were both circling Nana, the only woman aboard. And the stories about Makimura keep getting stranger, something about a bird that supposedly hands out immortality. Their pods slam down on a planet that looks empty. One of the survivors, Saruta, is in love with Nana and he is about to meet the Phoenix face to face. What did Makimura bring with him onto that ship, and why is his pod still flying?
