Prince Itaka and Princess Lilia are supposed to be planning a wedding. Their two kingdoms will join, the throne is waiting, and everything is soft and hopeful. Then a light shows up in the night sky. It moves. It gets closer. The thing lands. Out of it comes a mechanical civilization that doesn't negotiate. It just takes. Villages go quiet, cities go silent, and almost everyone ends up wearing chains for a new master. On the worst night of all, Lilia gives birth to twins. The nanny Tarama, terrified of what the invaders might do to two royal babies, grabs one of them and runs. She hands the child to Balga, a gladiator who knows more about blood than about cradles. Neither of them has any idea what they're carrying. Both twins were born with something burning inside them, a power that could turn the whole fight around. The enemy is still sweeping the planet, hunting down every last human civilization. And somewhere out there, one of the two children is growing up in a gladiator's shadow. So when the machines finally come for the rest, which twin will be standing in their way?
