A king sends his youngest son to kill a tribal chief. Oguna rides into Kumaso country with a sword and orders, the way princes do. Then a hunting arrow slices into him. Not from an ambush. From a girl named Kajika, who was aiming at game, misses, and nearly kills a stranger instead. She patches him up in her village, guilty and fussing, and somewhere between the bandages and the small talk, the two of them fall for each other. Simple. Until Oguna learns whose sister she is. Takeru Kawakami's. The man he crossed the mountains to murder. Now he sits with it: his father's command on one side, the girl on the other, and a legendary bird said to watch over Kumaso in the middle. He goes looking for the Phoenix, hoping it will tell him what to do. What does a man choose when the only two roads left both end with someone he loves getting hurt?
