A queen dreams of a white elephant with six tusks passing into her body. The wise man Asita looks at the newborn and says the boy will grow up to rule the whole world. Which world, though, is the question nobody thinks to ask. The boy is Siddhartha. He is taught to ride, fight and govern, everything a future king needs, and he wants none of it. Down in the dust, a slave named Chapra has the opposite problem: every door is shut to him, so he joins the enemy Kosala army just to climb. Drought, hunger, endless war, a caste system that grinds people down. Siddhartha walks out of the palace and leaves it all behind, while Chapra fights his way up from nothing. Their paths are heading straight at each other, one toward a throne, the other away from it. When the boy who was promised the world gives it up, what exactly is he looking for out there?
