Forty years ago something wiped the memories of an entire civilization. Paradigm City survived, but nobody remembers what came before, only the wreckage and the tech they dug out of it. So information about the past is the most valuable thing in town, and plenty of people are willing to kill for it. Roger Smith used to be a cop. Now he negotiates: between the government, the crooks, ordinary folks who just want to be left alone. It pays badly and it gets him shot at. When a deal goes sideways he calls on Norman, a butler who can handle almost anything, and Dorothy, an android with a flat stare and sharper comebacks. And if things get truly ugly, there is Big O. A black machine, absurdly huge, and every time Roger climbs in, half a district tends to come down with the bad guys. Every job pulls him further into what really happened four decades back. His clients lie. The city lies. Sometimes the ground under him does too. What exactly is buried in those missing forty years, and who is going to reach it first?
