Coal smoke rolls through every street of Steam City, and when it thickens into fog, the criminals come out to play. A bank job, a kidnapping, a bomb in a clock tower: the mist swallows the evidence before anyone can blink. That is where the detectives come in. Narutaki carries a pistol that flips into whatever he needs it to be, Lingling patches up the wounded and keeps her head when things go sideways, and Gohliki, a hulking Megamaton robot, walks straight through walls when the case calls for it. Then the fog lifts on something the three of them were never supposed to see. A villain with a machine bigger than Gohliki, a plan that reaches past the city limits, and clues that point to a power source nobody in Steam City can explain. Narutaki starts asking the right questions, which is exactly what makes him a target. The closer he gets, the more the mist feels less like weather and more like a curtain someone is holding shut. Can three detectives, one gun and one robot really clear the smoke before the whole city chokes on it?
