Humanity nearly wiped itself out in the 21st century. The fix was genetic: engineers cut love and the hunger for power right out of the species. Women outnumber men nine to one now, since they were judged the less aggressive half, and every person is grown to fill a slot that society decided it needs. Then there is the ring. A huge structure hangs in orbit around Earth, and it has been quietly feeding information to the alien race that parked it there. Nobody asked for it. Nobody can switch it off. Five women are sent up to deal with the threat. What they carry, what they were built to be good at, and what was edited out of them before they were born may matter more than the aliens do. Can a crew that was designed never to feel love or ambition still find a reason to fight for the planet below?
