One night the sky turns red. Not a sunset, not a fire. A moon the color of a wound hangs over everything, and the world that was there before simply stops. The survivors cram into a city behind high walls, and for a while the walls are enough. Then people start changing on the inside. Most keep it together. The ones who can't begin to leak something into the air around them, a kind of mental plague that spreads to anyone standing too close, and the city learns to treat its own neighbors as the danger. So they build a department whose whole job is scrubbing that contamination out, and Lu Xin signs up for it. He's new. He's eager. He's about to find out what the job actually asks of a person. But what did Lu Xin see on the night the moon turned red, and why is he so sure he belongs on the cleanup crew?
