A letter arrives from someone who just died. Inside it: the words they could never say while alive. Love, hate, regret, or just some small thing that never got spoken. Fumika delivers them, a quiet girl with a staff named Kanaka that talks back. She hands these shigofumi to the living, even when they slam the door in her face, even when reading it will wreck them. Here's the strange part. Carriers like Fumika are supposed to take the shape of a dead person they resembled. They don't grow. They don't change. So why does Fumika keep getting older? She watches families come apart over secrets, watches people learn what the dead really thought of them, and says almost nothing about herself. Kanaka jokes, Fumika doesn't. Every delivery peels back someone else's life, never hers. Who was she before this job, and what did she leave behind that she can't remember?
