The Black Cat Cafe sits on a quiet street in the fifth ward of the Imperial Capital. The girls who work there wear elegant kimonos and pour coffee with steady hands. They are also machines. Automata, built as humanoid weapons for a great war. The war ended years ago. Someone restored them, gave them aprons and a counter to stand behind, and now they serve customers who have no idea what these hands were made to do. Then there is Haizakura. She woke up recently, and the reset wiped her memory clean. Her name, her purpose, the reason she was built: gone. What stayed is stranger. She cannot stop singing. Not for applause. She just does it, the way other people breathe. At the cafe, the past does not stay buried. Old duties keep surfacing, old guilt, the feeling that they were made for something heavier than tea trays. The other Automata carry it too, each in her own way, and now they have to figure out what to do with a war that is over and a girl who remembers none of it. Can a weapon learn to live without a target? And what exactly is Haizakura singing back to herself?
