Souta left Kagawa years ago because he wanted nothing to do with the family udon shop. Tokyo, web design, a life that was his own. Then his father dies, and he comes back to settle the estate and shut the place down for good. He walks into the old restaurant, and there is a kid asleep in one of the cooking pots. Filthy, alone, no name. Souta feeds him, finds him something to wear, figures that is the end of it. It is not. The boy sprouts furry ears and a tail right in front of him. A tanuki. The one people in town have whispered about for years, supposedly hanging around these parts longer than anyone can remember. So Souta quits his job and stays. He calls the kid Poko. Two of them now, knocking around a dusty restaurant, one small and loud, one grown and quietly falling apart. Souta starts remembering things he thought he had buried: the town he ran from, the father he never really talked to, all the years he spent not looking back. But what happens when a tanuki boy grows up, and the man who took him in finally has to face why he came home at all?
