A struggling manga artist named Shin Karino opens his door to find a four year old holding out a box of tissues. A housewarming gift, apparently. The kid introduces himself as Kotarou Satou and says he just moved in next door. Alone. No parents, no relatives, nobody at all. He talks like a tiny businessman, bows at the right moments, and handles his own cooking, laundry and rent. Karino figures there has to be a catch. There isn't one. So the grown man starts following a preschooler around town. To the bathhouse, mostly, just to make sure nothing happens to him. That's where it hits Karino: this kid takes care of himself the same way Karino takes care of himself, badly and without complaint. Bit by bit the other tenants in the building get pulled into Kotarou's orbit too, feeding him, walking him home, letting him win at games. Kotarou insists he doesn't need anyone. The neighbors keep showing up anyway. What is a four year old doing in an apartment by himself in the first place?
