Kouhei teaches high school all day, then comes home to his little daughter Tsumugi, and somewhere between those two jobs he still has to figure out dinner. Since his wife died, he has done his best, which lately means convenience store bento again and again. He can explain fractions and tie her shoes and carry her on his back when she gets tired. He cannot cook. That one failure sits on him every time he peels back another plastic lid. Then one evening a student of his, Kotori, invites them to her family's restaurant. Warm room, empty tables. Her mother is away for work, her parents are busy splitting up, and the girl mostly eats alone. Also, it turns out she burns rice as badly as he does. So the three of them start cooking together: chopping onions, stirring pots, Tsumugi perched on a stool watching everything. It is slow work, and messy, and nobody is very good at it yet. But something about a hot meal made by your own hands changes the shape of an evening, and Kouhei starts to notice how much Tsumugi laughs when the kitchen smells like food instead of nothing. Can three people who barely know each other really make a family out of rice and miso soup?
