Matoi Sumeragi just wants to get through high school without anyone noticing her. She splits her time between classes and her part time job at a small town shrine, where her best friend Yuma's family treats her like one of their own. After her mom vanished, Matoi bounced between grandparents before landing at her dad's place, and this quiet routine is exactly what she fought to build. Then she and Yuma come home to splinters. The shrine is wrecked, Yuma's parents are bleeding on the ground, and nothing about the scene makes sense. Yuma tries the God Possession ritual to fight back, but the divine power jumps straight into Matoi instead, the one girl who never asked for any of it. Now she's swinging a power meant for someone else, hunting creatures called Nights, and the Vatican has already sent an exorcist named Claris to poke around. Her dad, a police detective, catches the case too, which means the two of them are chasing the same monster from opposite ends. Nobody knows who keeps sending the Nights, or why they picked this town, or why Matoi of all people. And the harder she fights to keep her old life, the more it slips through her fingers. What exactly does the power inside her want?
