In N-City, the hit mobile game Magical Girl Raising Project is the closest most girls will ever get to the real thing. Then one night Koyuki Himekawa gets a notification: she has been picked. Out of ten thousand players, she is one of the few who actually becomes a magical girl, her avatar Snow White made flesh. She patrols, she helps people, she collects Magical Candies. So do the others. Then the admins drop the bomb. Too many magical girls, they say. The numbers are getting cut in half. Every week whoever collects the fewest candies loses her powers, and the first girl to drop out dies in the real world. That is when the sixteen of them understand what they signed up for. More rules get added, each one uglier than the last, and the candy hunt turns into something else entirely: sixteen girls, one city, and no way to quit. Who ends up on the wrong side of the leaderboard first, and how far will the rest go to make sure it is not them?
