Humanity fled a war with the giant Zentradi and packed itself onto a fleet of colony ships drifting toward the center of the galaxy. By 2059, the Macross Frontier feels less like a refugee convoy and more like a regular city. Kids go to school. Pop stars sell out arenas. Alto Saotome, a trainee pilot, is practicing his formation flying for a show headlined by Sheryl Nome, the biggest singer in space. Then the sky splits open. Creatures called the Vajra tear through the defense perimeter and slam into the city right next to the concert hall. Everyone runs. A girl named Ranka Lee gets left behind, and Alto dives in to pull her out, which means climbing into a cockpit he was never supposed to fly. The S.M.S. private military unit notices what he did up there and comes knocking with a job offer. So now he's fighting an alien swarm he knows nothing about, with two singers pulling him in different directions and a fleet full of civilians depending on him to hold the line. What exactly are the Vajra after, and why do they keep showing up wherever the music is?
