A boy named Nai has one clue to the person he is searching for: an old bracelet, left behind by the one who vanished. He has nothing else. Gareki, meanwhile, steals for a living, day after day, and their paths cross inside a crumbling mansion, where the owner smiles warmly and eats people. Gareki makes a mess to buy them time, and the two run. Then the woman comes back, her body twisting into something hungry and no longer human. So now they are fugitives on the run, and the whole country is hunting two dangerous criminals. The rescue comes from the last place they expect: Circus, the strongest organization around, a government defense unit that handles what the police cannot and shields ordinary people from varuga, monsters that feed on humans. Nai and Gareki sign on, hoping Circus will lead them to the missing friend. Instead they get varuga, secrets, and a shadowy outfit called Kafka pulling strings in the dark. But Nai's bracelet is not just a keepsake, and the boy who holds it may be tied to Kafka far more deeply than Circus can guess. When the people who saved them start hiding things too, who exactly are the two of them working for?
